Noah hadn't come out of the bunk room all day. When Julien checked on him, he was bent over one book or the other, mumbling to himself while he ground herbs in his bowl or wrapped twine around pieces of carved wood. It was probably better he did all that in here rather than where the others could see him—Julien had heard enough arguments about the use of magic to last him a lifetime, and having Noah at least temporarily out of sight kept new outbursts to a minimum.

Julien opened the door one last time before sunset and found Noah right where he'd left him—on the floor among his papers and jars. It was a picture that would have made Julien himself uncomfortable not so long ago, if he was honest—a witch in the midst of unknown spellwork involving a number of some unidentified totems. He couldn't say he wasn't still wary of magic, after all he'd seen in his life. But this witch—just this one—only made him feel warm.

Noah looked up from the floor with dark bags under his eyes, his hands working steadily on the mortar and pestle in his lap. “Is it time to go?”

The hunter frowned at him. “Are you sure you're up for it? T'as l'air pas mal fatigué.”

“This is just...a lot. I'm okay.” He used the nearby bed frame to push himself up, but when he rose, he wavered for a second as though he'd stood up too fast.

“Why don't you stay in tonight?” Julien said, one hand on the witch's shoulder. “Get some rest. There's no sense in exhausting yourself. You're going your part.”

“And, what, you guys are just going to shoot demons quietly?”

“Don't worry about us. Promise me you'll put that away and get some sleep. Just for tonight.”

Noah didn't look pleased about the idea. He peered over at Julien with his lips pursed into a skeptical frown, but then he let out a sigh and looked down at the floor, scuffing the wood with one bare foot. “Fine.”

“We'll muddle through without you somehow, mon raleur.” Julien smiled at Noah's sleepy, dismissive shooing and shut the door on his way out.
